California's electric industry is opening to consumer choice, giving you the power to participate in community choice aggregation and choose your electric energy supplier. The San Joaquin Valley Power Authority has been formed by Kings County and 11 local cities - Clovis, Corcoran, Dinuba, Hanford, Kerman, Kingsburg, Lemoore, Parlier, Reedley, Sanger and Selma - to engage in regional energy planning and bring energy choice to local residents and businesses in the central San Joaquin Valley.

Community Choice is a local program that allows you, as either a resident or business within the participating cities and counties of the San Joaquin Valley Power Authority, to choose to buy power from the power authority or from your current utility, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) or Southern California Edison (SCE).

Until now, you have not been able to choose who provides you with electric energy service. You have bought your electric service from the local electric utility that serves your area (PG&E or SCE). Your local electric utility either generates or purchases electricity for you. It then delivers the electricity to your home or business over the poles and wires it owns.

If you choose to purchase power from the San Joaquin Valley Power Authority, your local electric utility would still deliver the electricity over their poles and wires. One of the benefits of purchasing power from the San Joaquin Valley Power Authority's Community Choice program is a cost savings on the generation portion of your electric bill.

The California Public Utilities Commission has created rules to govern how a community choice aggregation program would be run and to protect the choices of consumers. All eligible residents and businesses are automatically included in the program unless they choose to opt out.  « Back
